    I'm afraid you are wrong in what you say a person with Scrupulosity should do. A person with faith needs to focus on the compassion and love of God, not focus on demonic images. Your comments would drive a person with faith into deeper mental torment because everything we face is a spiritual battle and there is warfare going on in heavenly realms for each soul. You need to listen to Mark DeJesus, he will explain to you, as a Christian, how important it is to focus on the goodness of God and to have compassion for ourselves.

    I’m really struggling with this one. I’ve been struggling with anxiety and panic for years, and it’s always been easy to take this approach. If palpitations scare me, I jog. If dizziness scares me, I spin in a circle. It all works so well. I’m only triggered by panic attacks, which I’ve usually handled well. But I just sort of sit with the worry that overwhelming stress (the last two months have been filled with grief and illness) are going to lead to a psychotic break and that my thought patterns during panic attacks are evidence of that. I don’t have a whole lot of checking behaviors for this. I’m doing all of my exposure/nonresponse to the panic triggers themselves. It’s more I just ruminate on this fear.

This is really impacting his life very negatively and he is willing to consult a reliable specialist all over the world like you regardless of the effort or price involved! Please advise if you are able to provide an exception and entertain this case though you do not seem to have capacity for every request I guess. We would be very grateful to you. Thanks a ton in advance!

    Hi Dr. Katie, thanks for the video but it feels we are coming across you a little too late. My brother is diagnoased with acute/severe OCD. And he is also very depressed and has stopped wishing to live and despite after being in a local rehab back in Delhi, India for good 6 weeks is now again back to the same situation in no time. What can we do as he won't take any medicines and has also stopped eating. We feel a bit helpless. The doctor at the hospital is asking for a re-admission for the same cost but the trust is lost as the doctor assumed he is ok to be released and released him. We did force him to go to the hospital/rehab as he had stopped eating and was on a death bed. It seems by making him go there, we just got an extension.

    I grew up in a very stupid family background. They always had this way to make the youg kids feel guilty by telling them that there always wrong because they are adults. And they know everything. So at the beginning when i started to view the world logically they used say that im wrong and like used to show a lot of emotions and explaining something bad always. At first i used not take notice but later i started to think what if im wrong. Because they always find a bad reason to explain that im wrong and they always like act like they get a heart attack so that's how my ocd started.

    Katie , how would ERP look on with checking your facebook constantly to see whether you've sent an inappropriate message or see whether you've liked someone's photo by mistake, which is something that you definitely wouldn't do? Would that be staying with the anxiety and the uncertainty of whether you've done it or not ?

    WHAT! I absolutely disagree. Do not leave hair straighteners on at the wall and plugged in. Not all straigtners have auto switch off. And do not leave toasters plugged in and on at the wall. My toaster has a clear label telling you not to do that. If, like me, you have an issue with checking electrical appliances are off, then gradually work your way down to fewer checks. But not "leaving stuff on." NO! Do not do it with candles! Do not leave candles alight when you aren't there... obviously! Reducing checking to a normal level is required, not abandoning common sense. I feel this lady has no technical knowledge of electrical appliances.

    • @23katied
      @23katied Місяць тому

      I understand your horror at these ideas! Unfortunately reducing checks is not a very effective method of combatting OCD. Checking is a way of trying to minimise discomfort. When we do things that we assume will cause discomfort and learn both that we can live with the discomfort and that the discomfort will get better in its own the need to check will dissipate.

    • @martinw245
      @martinw245 Місяць тому

      @23katied Hi Katie, I'm 66. I've had OCD from the age 8. I understand OCD well. And can I just say I really appreciate what you do. But what we don't do is conduct therapy in a way that poses a serious risk of a house fire... obviously. You actually said, "You can do the same with candles." (6:43 In video) I interpret that as leaving candles alight while you leave the house. That is a very bad thing for you to advise people to do. The fire brigade would freak out at the suggestion. I had a toaster that had a malfunctioning switch, and the element remained on after I removed the bread. Luckily, 40 minutes later, I was still at home, but it had blackened the underneath of the kitchen cupboard. Some electrical items you can indeed leave plugged in, and the socket switched on. However, there are appliances you should never do that with. For the appliances that pose too much of a fire risk, then gradually reducing checking down to switching off and unplugging but not checking if you have, or maybe one check, is the way to go, not leaving the house with hair straighteners, toasters and other such devices with an electrcally live conductive path to the heating element energised in the appliance. It's not about "horror and discomfort" in an OCD, avoiding compulsions sense... It's about abandoning common sense and posing a fire risk. Therapy is not about risking burning a house down. As a sufferer for many decades, from perhaps, before you were born, I love what you do. But please think carefully about advice to leave items with heating elements switched on, contrary to manufacturers' advice and common sense. And certainly don't tell people they can leave candles burning. And of course, unplugging and switching off is not checking.
